Minister of Education Prakash Javadekar will be appointed as an adviser to US President Donald Trump, his ministry has said.
The move comes as Javadeker is likely to be the focus of a new report into the US-India relations, to be released on Monday.
The report, which is expected to be written by former US State Department official Michael McFaul, will seek to analyse the current state of US-Indian relations and how they can be better managed.
The US and India are close allies, with the US having the largest defence trade and investment pact with India.
Javadek is the third Indian education minister in a decade to be named as an advisor.
The last two, Harsh Vardhan and Priyanka Chaturvedi, were appointed to the post in 2013 and 2015.
Javadkar, who is also a minister in the Congress, is one of the most popular Indian politicians and is considered a “national hero” in India.
