Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D) on Wednesday announced a plan to fight a Republican proposal to make private student loans forgiven for federal student loans.
“I believe that students who have been unable to repay their loans and have been saddled with enormous debt are not receiving the support that they need,” Booker and Gillibran said in a statement.
“We must ensure that students are able to access and repay their student loans with dignity and compassion.”
The announcement comes amid a wave of nationwide protests against Trump’s proposed student loan overhaul.
On Wednesday, hundreds of student loan borrowers nationwide took to the streets in solidarity with the students who took to those same streets to oppose Trump’s proposal.
Warren and Booker announced the plan to take action in the wake of the students’ actions.
“The time has come to take up the fight to protect the student loan programs that millions of students rely on,” Warren said in the statement.
